Contemporary Alpine Folk Fiddling

by Bernhard Hanneken

Alma is Spanish for soul. So it’s small wonder that several artists opt for this name. Internationally known are a Finnish and a Bosnian singer, an English post rock ambient band – and this Austrian quintet of four women and one man. ‘Alma’ also includes the word ‘alm’, the Alpine pasture that nourishes the ensemble’s music– these young musicians cherish the tradition as much as its modern interpretation or collective improvisation. This approach is the basis of the band’s carefully selected, wide-ranging repertoire, which includes old yodels, songs, and traditional melodies as well as own compositions and new arrangements of familiar tunes. With violins, double bass, accordion, and vocals as well as with great ease, passion, and originality, they make the roots grow musical shoots and blossoms.
