New Northern Winds

by Bernhard Hanneken

What a surprise! At about the same time two ensembles consisting of flutists have started up in both Finland and Sweden. Now, Finnish Wind on Wind and Swedish Zephyr embark as Tuultenpesä on a joint journey to develop and enjoy what colours and expressive possibilities the different flutes can offer. With their different traditions and unique backgrounds as musicians and composers they cross-fertilise and experiment new sounds and forms. The rhythms and melodies come from the Nordic (polskas, hallings, runo songs) and various other folk traditions. Minimalist music from contemporary Western art music, repetitive rhythms, modal melodies and multiple melodic layers are also important sources of creation. Music from a gentle breeze to a wild storm.
