Songs and Stories from the Azores

by Bernhard Hanneken

Almost 1,400 km west of Portugal, in the North Atlantic Ocean, lies the archipelago of the Azores, nine volcanic islands (plus a cluster of islets) that is home to sailors and gone whalers. Their stories and experiences are at the basis of the repertoire of Carlos Medeiros and Pedro Lucas. Medeiros brings sea salt in his voice, Lucas, half Medeiros’ age, provides youth and fine finger picking on his guitar, bass and keyboards add jazzy notes, and observations of the current state of the Azores and its political homeland, Portugal keep the repertoire from being nostalgic. Two Quixotes sailing between the Atlantic seas and the Mediterranean shores.
