Changes in the program!

Unfortunately Sahel-e Makoran’s concerts are canceled. The Iranian ensemble didn’t get the necessary visa documents. Maryam Akhondy & Banu and Mitra Behpoori will be performing instead of Sahel-e Makoran.

Banu is the Persian word for noble or distinguished lady. A whole choir of them will be coming to Rudolstadt. The group of Iranian women living in exile was founded by Maryam Akhondy almost twenty years ago in Cologne. Maryam, a virtuosic singer in her own right, has been collecting a rich treasure of folk songs telling about hard work, weddings, deep grief or playful parties. By performing these songs Banu wants to give a voice to the women who never had the chance to be present on the stages of festivals and concert halls. At the same time this all-female a-capella ensemble tries to represent different ethnic groups and regions of Iran.

Mitra Behpoori
At our conference „Sketches of Iran“ Mitra Behpoori will give a lecture about how a musical instrument such as the tar can report on its cultural origins as a storage medium. She holds a bachelor degree in Classical Persian Music from the University of Tehran, College of Music and Performing Arts. Afterwards, she started to study for her master’s in musicology with a focus on Digital Edition at the Musicology Seminar of Detmold University of Music and University of Paderborn where she is also working as a research assistant. In addition to her studies, Mitra Behpoori is an active musician on the tar and the oud. In December 2014 she founded the Duo Delgosha with Japanese percussionist Kazuyo Tsunehiro. Here in Rudolstadt she will perform together with tombak player Omid Niavarani.
