Line up 2018: Namibian Tales
by Miriam Rossius
This very special concert is a tribute to age-old Kalahari tradition and at the same time explores completely new territory. Four ‚grandmothers’ of the San and Amsterdam-based quartet Namibian Tales enter a fascinating dialogue. The band’s singer Shishani has Namibian roots. Two years ago she and percussionist Sjahin During traveled to the Kalahari desert searching for the authentic music of the San. The journey became a very intense encounter for everyone involved. Together the elder San women and the young band started celebrating musical culture in very new ways developing an astonishing repertoire: rarely heard vocal harmonies and clapping of the San merge with guitar, cello, kora, percussion. In selected concerts they are now sharing that mesmerizing encounter with a European audience.
