Cymin Samawatie DEUCymin Samawatie is one oft he most creative musicians within Germany’s ethno-jazz scene. Born in 1976 in Braunschweig to Iranian parents she studied classical music and jazz and in 2002 she founded Cyminology, a Berlin based quartet of global reputation. It combines Persian poetry and chamber-esque contemporary music and takes its cue from the sound of the Persian language presenting poets such as Rumi, Hafis and Khayyam. Since 2010 the singer and composer has been working with members of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. In Berlin Cymin also curated the festival Female Voice of Iran. In 2013 she established the transcultural contemporary chamber orchestra Divan der Kontinente (Divan of the Continents). Its music emerges out of diverse genres, such as contemporary jazz and Neue Musik. All these activities reflect a versatile and multi-talented artistic personality at the highest level. Thanks to her superb skills and sensitivity she enriches the bridge between Persian and Western music with significant new elements. The jury of German world music award RUTH therefore decided to give the main award 2018 to Cymin Samawatie.
