Ritual Music from Eastern China

by Bernhard Hanneken

This wedding and funeral band comes right from the vast Huang-Huai-Hai plain in Eastern China where the Zhou family has been playing festive music, secular as well as religious, for some 600 years. Led by the suona (shawm), this pure native folk music will blow the listener away. While Westerners tend to associate especially funeral and temple music with a solemn and gloomy sound, the Zhou Family Band’s art is an exuberant, heart-breaking, ritualised and institutionalised country music, extroverted, at times crazy and chaotic but always intoxicating. Fascinating stuff.
